The Headline Said Women Need More Electrolytes. Gatorade Supplied the Study.


Electrolyte powder has somehow become a lifestyle.
People mix it into giant water bottles before sitting at a desk, walking through Target, or completing a 40-minute workout in an air-conditioned gym. Social media tells us that plain water does not really hydrate us, our cells are starving for minerals, and the vague fatigue of being an adult may be a sodium emergency.
The market reflects the message. At the time I began this piece, electrolyte powders occupied three of the leading positions shown in Amazon's health-and-wellness bestseller listings. Amazon's rankings change constantly, but the wider pattern is difficult to miss. Liquid I.V. became the second-most-purchased product on all of Amazon during the second day of Prime Day 2026.
That is a shitload of expensive salt.
Then a new round of headlines arrived:
“3 Mistakes Women Are Making When They Work Out, According to a New Study”
Another promised:
“Experts Say This Simple Mistake Could Be Making Your Workout Feel Harder”
The reported mistakes were arriving at exercise dehydrated, failing to replace enough sodium, and not consuming enough carbohydrates during workouts.
The advice sounds plausible. Some of it is useful. The study underneath it deserves a closer look, though, because it came from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute—the research arm of a company currently selling an entire “Advanced Hydration System.”
That does not make the findings false. It does make the details rather important.
What the new research reportedly found
Gatorade announced findings from its “Body of Science” project in July 2026. According to the company's press release, researchers collected hydration, sweat, sodium, and fueling data from more than 500 women participating in basketball, soccer, ice hockey, and other activities.
Gatorade reported that:
43% arrived at workouts dehydrated.
57% did not consume what Gatorade considered adequate carbohydrates during exercise, and half consumed none.
Participants replaced about 20% of the sodium they lost during practice, compared with the 50% replacement Gatorade recommends.
Sweat rates varied considerably from one woman to another.
These are worthwhile questions. Women remain badly underrepresented in sports-science research. A 2021 review examined 5,261 publications containing more than 12.5 million participants. Only 6% of the papers studied women exclusively, and women represented just 34% of all participants.
More research on women is needed. Gatorade is correct about that.
Now we need to separate that legitimate problem from what this particular project can currently tell us.
We do not have a study to inspect
As I write this, the findings have been presented at a conference, but I cannot find a complete peer-reviewed paper containing the methods and results. The public evidence is primarily Gatorade's press release and the media articles built from it.
That leaves basic questions unanswered.
How did researchers define dehydration? What tests did they use? How long and intense were the practices? Were the participants recreational exercisers, competitive athletes, or a mixture? How much did they sweat? Were the basketball results different from the ice-hockey results? What was the climate? Did the researchers measure what participants ate before and after practice? What were the actual outcome ranges rather than the averages selected for the release?
We also cannot inspect the statistical analysis, exclusions, protocol, funding disclosures, or conflicts beyond the obvious fact that Gatorade conducted and promoted the work.
This does not mean the study was poorly conducted. It means we do not yet have enough information to know how well it was conducted.
A press release is a sales trailer for research. It is not the full movie.
Watch “female athletes” become “women”
The most revealing language change is not a dramatic verb. It is a noun.
Gatorade studied more than 500 female athletes and active participants across sports.
The coverage tells women they are making three workout mistakes.
That expansion matters. A college basketball player completing a two-hour practice in a hot gym has different needs from a woman lifting for 45 minutes before work. Both are women. Their shared sex does not make their sweat loss, training demand, diet, health history, or sodium requirement interchangeable.
The study's most useful reported finding was the enormous variation among women. That should have produced a headline about individual hydration needs.
Instead, much of the coverage converted variation into a common deficiency.
The video completes the sales pitch
Short-form video can distort evidence more effectively than an old-fashioned headline.
The creator looks exhausted. A packet tears open. Colored powder falls through a sunbeam into a spotless water bottle. Thirty seconds later, the creator is training, smiling, and explaining that she finally learned plain water was never properly hydrating her.
The spoken claim may remain technically cautious: “This study found many women are underhydrated.” The images supply the promise. I felt bad, I used this, and now I feel good. Add an affiliate code and the scientific conclusion has quietly become a product demonstration.
None of those edits tells you that the research involved athletes across several sports, that the full paper is unavailable, or that individual sweat rates varied widely. Video gives the viewer a person, a problem, and a solution before uncertainty has time to put its shoes on.
The recommendation and the product came from the same place
The press release says participants replaced about 20% of the sodium lost during practice, “versus the recommended 50%.”
Recommended by whom?
Gatorade.
That percentage may be reasonable for certain athletes. Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost in sweat, and replacing some of it can help people who exercise for a long time, sweat heavily, train in heat, or repeatedly train without much recovery time. Sports-hydration guidance has supported individualized fluid and sodium plans for years.
But “replaced 20% during practice” does not automatically mean “finished the day sodium deficient.” People also consume sodium in meals before and after training. The average American already consumes more than 3,300 milligrams per day, above the federal recommendation of less than 2,300 milligrams.
Context determines whether another 500 or 1,000 milligrams is a useful replacement or expensive redundancy.
The carbohydrate claim needs the same context. Gatorade recommends 30–60 grams per hour during activity, but carbohydrate during exercise becomes more useful as sessions grow longer, harder, and more demanding. Someone jogging for 30 minutes does not need to eat mid-run, but an athlete playing two hours of basketball benefits from fuel.
Without the duration and intensity of the sessions in this study, calling zero carbohydrates a “mistake” is impossible to defend universally.
Industry funding is not an automatic disqualification
It would be lazy to stop at “Gatorade paid for it, so ignore it.”
The company has laboratories, equipment, scientists, athlete access, and decades of expertise in sweat and hydration. Industry-funded work can answer useful questions. We would lose a great deal of legitimate research if every commercial connection disqualified a result.
The conflict changes the level of scrutiny.
Gatorade designed or conducted the research, selected the findings for its release, supplied the interpretation, defined the recommended replacement target, and sells the convenient solution. Media outlets then turned that package into advice for their readers.
That chain does not prove deception. It does create several opportunities for favorable framing.
The right response is to inspect the full study when it becomes available and compare its methods, results, and limitations with the promotional story. Until then, confidence should remain modest.
When electrolytes actually earn their keep
Electrolyte drinks are useful tools. I would seriously consider one when:
Exercise lasts longer than about an hour, especially at higher intensity.
Heat and humidity substantially increase sweat loss.
Your clothes regularly show white salt marks after training.
You have multiple training sessions or competitions in one day.
Physical work keeps you sweating for hours.
Illness has caused meaningful fluid loss, in which case a medically formulated oral rehydration product may be more appropriate.
Water and normal meals will generally cover a short workout, an easy walk, routine lifting in climate control, or an ordinary day at a desk. You do not need a hydration protocol because you answered emails with intensity.
One simple way to estimate sweat loss is to weigh yourself before and after a representative workout, accounting for whatever you drink. A large drop tells you more about your needs than a creator pointing at a jar while captions fly across the screen.
The seven-cent electrolyte drink
The minerals are not rare. The packet is expensive because it is flavored, branded, measured, portable, advertised, and convenient.
Here is a simple homemade sports drink for a long, sweaty session:
Homemade electrolyte drink
32 ounces of water
1/8 teaspoon regular table salt
1/4 teaspoon Morton Lite Salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
That provides approximately:
585 milligrams of sodium
350 milligrams of potassium
8 grams of sugar
It is not a medical oral rehydration solution, and it is not magic. It is water, sodium, potassium, a little carbohydrate, and enough citrus to make the experience less like drinking from the Mississippi.
Using national online grocery prices available in August 2026, the approximate cost per serving looks like this:

For comparison, LMNT currently costs about $1.50 per stick, while a one-time 16-pack of Liquid I.V. costs $1.56 per stick.
The homemade version is roughly 21–22 times cheaper, a savings of about 95%.
If someone used one serving every day for a year:

That is more than $500 per year for flavor development, packaging, portability, convenience, marketing, and not having to locate the quarter-teaspoon before a workout.
Those benefits may be worth paying for. Convenience is real. If a good-tasting packet helps someone drink enough during long summer practices, the product is doing a useful job.
Just understand what you are purchasing.
You are not buying access to minerals unavailable in nature. You are buying a professionally engineered experience around ingredients that cost pennies.
A few safety notes before playing kitchen chemist
More electrolyte is not automatically better.
People with kidney disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, or medical conditions affecting fluid balance should discuss electrolyte use with a clinician. Potassium-containing salt substitutes can also be dangerous with certain medications, including some drugs used for blood pressure and heart conditions.
Do not keep adding scoops because you still feel tired. Fatigue, headaches, cramps, and brain fog are vague symptoms with many possible causes. Persistent problems deserve more investigation than a larger packet.
The homemade recipe is intended for healthy adults replacing sweat during demanding exercise. It should not replace a properly formulated oral rehydration solution for vomiting, diarrhea, or serious dehydration.
The practical takeaway
The Gatorade findings are plausible. Some female athletes almost certainly begin demanding practices underhydrated and fail to replace enough fluid, sodium, or carbohydrate to perform their best.
That conclusion does not establish that women generally need electrolyte powder, that every workout requires mid-session carbohydrate, or that plain water has stopped working.
The study reportedly found wide individual variation. That is the lesson worth keeping.
Match the tool to the loss.
If you train hard for hours, sweat through your clothes in Iowa humidity, or compete multiple times in a day, an electrolyte drink may be useful. Buy a packet for convenience or mix one at home for seven cents.
If you sit at a desk, eat normal meals, and complete an ordinary workout, your kidneys, food, thirst, and water bottle remain an impressively competent hydration system.
The human body did not become dependent on watermelon salt powder in 2026.
